Eden Boys’ School makes semi-final of Premier League Enterprise Challenge

A team of pupils from Eden Boys’ School, Birmingham are celebrating their achievements reaching the semi-final of the Premier League Enterprise Challenge.

Five of our Year 9 pupils visited Leicester City FC’s King Power stadium on Tuesday 16 January for the penultimate stage of this national enterprise competition.

Representing Aston Villa FC, our pupils pitched their ideas of ways in which the football club could increase the diversity of its fan base and grow supporter numbers through staging community events linked to festivals and celebrations.

Team Eden had already beaten off stiff competition from other Birmingham schools, succeeding through two heats of the challenge. At the King Power stadium, they went head-to-head against five other schools in the semi-final.

Although our pupils didn’t make it through to the final, they felt proud of how much they had achieved and learnt during the challenge.

The Premier League Enterprise Challenge tests young people’s entrepreneurial skills through a real-life business challenge with a football theme. The programme, run in partnership with Sport Relief, uses the appeal of football and the expertise of the clubs to engage young people in business education and activities.

This year’s task challenged teams to come up with business ideas to engage the community in their local football club with a view to growing supporter numbers. As well as coming up with ideas to meet the brief, each school had to cost their proposals and forecast the revenue that would be generated, as well as presenting their ideas on stage to a Dragons’ Den style panel.

Pupil Muhammad Ibrahim, who took on the role of Project Manager in the challenge, commented, “It’s been a fantastic experience for us all. We learnt how to create a business model on paper and how to turn it into a reality. We also developed valuable life skills such as teamwork, public speaking, communication and providing answers on the spot. Overall, it was a huge confidence boost for us to present in front of such high profile people.”

This was the second consecutive year that a team from Eden Boys’ School made it through to the semi-final of the Premier League Enterprise Challenge.

Our Principal Asiyah Ravat said, “The Premier League Enterprise Challenge provides young people with a real-life experience of competing in an entrepreneurial task supported by wonderful mentors. These five boys worked incredibly hard to prepare for the semi-final, and put on a professional performance in front of the panel of judges. They did their school, and Aston Villa, very proud.”
