Pupils celebrate GCSE success after year of pandemic challenges

Pupils across the country are celebrating their GCSE achievements after overcoming a year of pandemic disruption.

For the pupils at Eden Boys’ School, Birmingham, GCSE results day brought special cause for celebration after they achieved excellent results despite facing lockdowns, periods of self-isolation and illness.

Exams were cancelled this summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Exam boards issued qualifications based on grades determined by teachers following tests completed in class.

High achieving pupil, Mahin Ashraf, was awarded the top grade, 9, in seven subjects, thanks to his extraordinary commitment to his education.

Mahin was appointed Head Boy in Year 11 after he proved himself to be a compassionate and caring member of the school community whilst supporting his peers through the pandemic.

He said: “I’ve worked really hard for these grades over the last few years and I am so glad that my hard work has been recognised. The teachers at my school have very high expectations and I always knew that they would help me get to the next level.”

Mahin will go on to study A levels in Computing, Economics and Maths at King Edward VI Aston Grammar School.

Khubaib Ibrahim was one of a number of high-achievers at the school, gaining grade 9s in 10 subjects.

Khubaib is a talented pupil who, teachers say, consistently performed at the top of his cohort. The aspiring medic raised more than £2,000 for charity during his time at the school and has secured a place at one of the leading grammar schools in the country.

Khubaib said: “I am so pleased with my results, and although it is a bit different this year, I’ve still worked really hard throughout school and am very glad to have achieved these grades The school had been incredibly supportive. I am so grateful to everyone helping me to grow into the person I am today”

He will go on to study A levels in Chemistry, Biology and Maths at King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys.

Akeel Arshad was overjoyed after he achieved a grade 9 in three subjects, a grade 8 in one subject and a grade 7 in five subjects.

Teachers say that Akeel is a dedicated pupil who, alongside his Deputy Head Boy duties, volunteered for the school foodbank and is a school council representative.

Akeel said: “I’ve had a great time at Eden Boys School and will really miss my school family. We’ve all supported one another through these difficult times and I think that this has helped me to become the very best person I can be. Thank you so much to everyone for helping me to get so far, I really don’t think I could have done it without you””

Akeel will go on to study A levels in Biology, Chemistry, Sociology and Geography. He hopes to secure a future in Medicine.

Asiyah Ravat, Executive Principal at Eden Boys’ School, Birmingham, paid tribute to this year’s cohort of GCSE pupils, who she said had worked tremendously well during a period of exceptional challenge.

She said: “This year, our pupils have had to work incredibly hard to overcome significant challenges to their education. Their perseverance and ability to continue to perform so well, in spite of these challenges, is a real testimony to their strength of character. A huge congratulations to all our pupils collecting their results today and thank you to all the parents and staff who have supported them during these difficult times.”
